Report

Guisborough Town’s bright start to the new season faltered when they went down to a disappointing 2-1 home defeat against Sunderland RCA.

The Priorymen got off to a great start after taking the lead after just eight minutes when striker Danny Earl found himself in space inside the penalty area and he drew RCA ‘keeper Robert Dean superbly before slotting the ball into the net for 1-0.

It was the perfect start in front of a bumper crowd of 301 but just nine minutes later on 17 minutes RCA equalised when winger Kyle Davis dispossessed a hesitant Guisborough defender Dylan McAvoy to score from just inside the penalty area to make it 1-1.

Worse was to follow only six minutes later when RCA took the lead when Davis swung over a curling free kick and big defender Greg Swansbury powered home bullet-like header and the Priorymen found themselves 2-1 down.

In the 40th minute Guisborough ‘keeper Ryan Catterick saved his side from going into the interval 3-1 down with an excellent save from RCA forward Dylan Elliot.

In the second half Guisborough had the greater share of possession and drove forward time and again but with 10 men often behind the ball the RCA defence wasn’t really tested enough.

And only another great Catterick save in the dying minutes from Michael Charlton prevented the Priorymen from going further behind.

After the game Guisborough Manager Gary Forster said: “We started really well but then we made silly mistakes and were punished for them.

“Although we huffed and puffed in the second half we lacked width and RCA basically shut the game down on us,” added Gary.

There was a nice touch in the clubhouse afterwards when a new ‘Man of the Match’ feature was introduced. Guisborough’s former kit man Wilf Forster was proud to present the new MoM award in memory of his brother John who sadly passed away recently to Guisborough skipper Josh Rowbotham, who had an excellent game in the heart of the Town defence.
