Report

The opening game of the season was always going to be hard against a strong and fast team like Thornaby, but Guisborough’s Falcons were up for the challenge.

A good positive start to the game ensued with Guisborough going for goal and challenging for the ball. Thornaby caused defensive problems for Guisborough with their speed but the Falcons also fought their way into the Thornaby box.

Guisborough went ahead after a powerful clearance from Rosy found Annabelle, who finished brilliantly. Thornaby responded by committing players forward, overrunning the Guisborough defence and they hit home a equaliser. By committing so many players forward it left space for the Falcons to counter attack and a ball through from Keira found Annabelle, who again finished brilliantly to make it 2-1.

Some great end to end play saw neither team take full control of the game and resulted in  Annabelle breaking away again. Unfortunately her strike across the goalie hit the post and came back out. Guisborough’s defence were so focused on getting the ball back sometimes that it left players free in the middle as they reacted to the ball, which saw Thornaby get a second goal to make it 2-2.

Thornaby’s third goal resulted from a miscommunication and they slotted the ball through for the third. Guisborough were clinical in front of goal with fabulous shooting from Annabelle which saw the teams finish the half level at 3-3.

Both teams tightened up in defence in the second half and the girls passing started to come together with Guisborough starting to use the wings more and making some good opportunities. Thornaby got a early goal taking it to 4-3.

The Guisborough defence stepped up their game and players were pressed and marked, and even though they did have quite a few shots, Falcons goalkeeper, Amy had them covered.

Guisborough had a great chance towards the end when Keira used her pace to get 1-on-1 with the goalie but she managed a good save that fell to Annabelle who just couldn’t convert.
