Emley AFC 2-1 Guisborough Town

Guisborough Town’s hopes of FA Vase glory this season were dashed as West Yorkshire side Emley came back from a goal down at half-time to score two second half goals to progress to the Second Round.

The Priorymen got a tremendous boost four minutes before half-time when big striker Ty O’Neill was put through on the Emley goal and he kept a cool head and hammered the ball home from just inside the penalty area.

The goal came slightly against the run of the overall first half play during which the ball had swung from end to end with neither side really imposing themselves consistently on the game.

But after the big lift of that 41st minute O’Neill goal, it was disappointing that Guisborough failed to press home their advantage in the second half.

After the interval it took Emley just eight minutes to draw level when they launched a powerful attack down the left and the ball was crossed for Iyrwan Gooden to rifle home for 1-1.

From then on Emley had their tails up and twice went close with two efforts bouncing off the Guisborough bar.

Emley got the winning goal on 73 minutes when two Emley forwards – both looking suspiciously offside – burst through the middle and with no linesman’s flag Alex Metcalf ran on and shot home to book his side’s place in the draw for the Second Round and leave Guisborough pondering on what might have been.

In truth, however, this was a below par performance by the Priorymen and overall Emley just about deserved their victory in front of a crowd of 275.

Guisborough are back in cup action next Wednesday, 25 October (KO 7.45) at home to Crook Town in the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup First Round.
