Guisborough Town v Whitby Town

A strong Whitby Town side – playing two steps above Guisborough Town in the non-league pyramid – proved just too good for the Priorymen in the annual Micky Skinner Memorial Trophy at the KGV.
But the scoreline was almost incidental as it gave Guisborough Town Manager Gary Forster another opportunity to assess his options when the Northern League season gets under way in earnest in early August.
Although the margin of defeat looked decisive, there were periods in the game when Guisborough were only a goal adrift of Whitby and the width of a post kept them from getting on equal terms in the first half.
After the game Guisborough boss Gary commented: “This proved a great workout for us. These friendly games are really a dress rehearsal for the league season proper and regardless of the result we took a lot of positives from the game.
“We created more chances than ever for a Guisborough side of mine – but out defending needs to improve and we need to be more ruthless especially higher up the pitch.
“We need to pre-empt opposition attacks starting and we need to think two or three moves ahead as the game unfolds.
“I suppose we showed a little naivety at times, but regardless of their age most of our players have played a lot of football and really should know better by now in terms of reading the game.
“But on the strength of our pre-season so far, particularly the Thornaby game when I thought we were excellent all round, I do believe we are on an upward curve.
“Many of our players have their football engrained in this football club and genuinely do see it as a badge of honour to wear the team shirt and I think this will be reflected positively in our performances as the season progresses, added Gary.
The attendance at the match against Whitby was a health 200 plus.
