Match Report

A brilliant hat-trick by recent signing from Wolviston Michael McGee paved the way for Guisborough to progress to the third round of the North Riding Senior Cup with a 5-1 victory over Wearside league side Richmond Town at the KGV on Wednesday.

Despite what looks like a convincing scoreline, plucky Richmond fought hard for 70 minutes of a competitively entertaining tussle and trailed by just one goal until Guisborough doubled their lead in the 71st minute after they were awarded a penalty.

It took the Priorymen 40 minutes of the first half to break the deadlock with a superbly- worked goal that was worth waiting for.

Guisborough winger Jack Blackford sent full back Ollie Cann away down the right flank and Cann whipped over a peach of a cross into the middle where McGee powered home a header into the Richmond net for 1-0 to the Priorymen.

After the interval Guisborough continued to make most of the running but it took them until the 71st minute to finally double their lead when McGee was brought down just inside the penalty area and up stepped Guisborough’s leading scorer Cole Kiernan to power home the spot kick for his 19th goal of the season.

Five minutes later and the Priorymen went 3-0 up with Jack Blackford and McGee linking up well again to put McGee clear and he slotted home beautifully.

Blackford was prominent again in the next move which led to Guisborough’s fourth goal and McGee’s hat-trick in the 79th minute as released Kiernan down the left and he in turn fed McGee who chipped the Richmond ‘keeper deftly to notch his third goal.

In the 90th minute Guisborough left back Liam Miller got in on the scoring act sweeping the ball home into the bottom corner for 5-0.

Richmond got a deserved consolation goal a minute later with Eddie Lewington cutting in from the left to lash the ball home into an empty net.
