Match Report
Guisborough are through to the next round of the cup after beating Redcar Athletic in a penalty shootout.
Guisborough were slow out the blocks and struggled to create opportunities in the first half and it was the home team that broke the deadlock after 30 minutes. They were awarded a free kick just wide of the 18 yard box and a well taken shot by the Redcar player beat Guisborough keeper Gemma Pollock.
The away team equalised before half time when a Rebecca Andrew cross was bundled over the line by a Redcar defender.
Half Time: 1-1
After a scrappy second half goals were slow to come, but a long range effort by Redcar put them ahead and Guisborough were left chasing the draw.
Luckily for Guisborough, Olivia Jeal had her scoring boots on and after chasing a through ball provided by Charlotte Walker, and using her strength to keep it, her shot sailed past the home keeper and into the net.
Full Time: 2-2 (4-5 Pens)
To secure passage to the next round, five brave team members had to step up to take the penalties. Every player scored for Guisborough but the third shot by a Redcar player strayed too close to stand-in keeper Toni Dooley, who saved it and ultimately gave them the win.
Penalty scorers were;
- Rebecca Andrew
- Olivia Jeal
- Olivia Bullock
- Toni Dooley
- Ellie Todd
Guisborough play Redcar Athletic again at King George V Stadium on Wednesday 14th, 7pm kick-off. This will no doubt be a very close game again but hopefully Guisborough can take all 3 points and keep the pressure on the league.
