Guisborough Town 2-1 Penrith

Match Report

Guisborough Town stormed up to sixth in the table with a hard-fought but well-deserved 2-1 victory over Penrith at the KGV Stadium on Saturday.

Two goals by Guisborough’s impressive winger Kurt Howes, including a 20th minute penalty, proved enough to earn the Priorymen a hugely important three points.

Although Guisborough dominated the first half they did not capitalise on the chances they created and,as is often the case in these circumstances, the visitors were allowed right back into the game with an equaliser a minute before half-time.

Thankfully for the Priorymen, Guisborough restored their lead just four minutes after the break with Howes grabbing his second goal of the game.

After the match, Guisborough Manager Steve Bell commented:  “In baking hot conditions today, I thought we definitely deserved to win the game.

“We had chances to put the game out of sight in the first half, but when you don’t take your chances in a game you dominate, then sometimes you suffer just like we did today.

“Penrith came more into the game in the second half and I suppose you could say we clung on for the win in the end,” declared Steve.

He continued:  “Look, to be honest I’m not too happy today.  If we are to move forward properly, then we should be sorting these types of out much better than we did this afternoon.

“Admittedly, yes it was a great three points and in the end and I’m sure we’ll move onwards from this.

“But it’s really important for us to be realistic about the manner of our win today if we are to be truly successful this season,” added Steve.

Next Saturday, 16 September, Guisborough have a great chance to consolidate their position in the upper half of the table when they travel to Tow Law Town, who currently are languishing second bottom of the table.
