Jay’s second half double retains John Butterfield Annual Shield for Priorymen.

Two second half goals by Jay Draper earned an ultimately comfortable win for Guisborough Town in the annual John Butterfield Memorial Shield game against Marske at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium on Tuesday night.

After a goalless first half in which Marske surprised the Priorymen with their speedy endeavour, Guisborough imposed their superiority after the break.

But it took until the 70th minute before Guisborough finally took the lead.

Josh MacDonald put over a peach of a cross to the unmarked Jay Draper who headed home convincingly from eight yards out.

Then in the 80th minute Guisborough were rightly awarded a penalty and up stepped Draper to fire home confidently to and clinch a well-deserved 2-0 victory.

At the end of the game, Guisborough Town Director Chris Wood recalled how John Butterfield played a crucial role in helping to keep the Club afloat 16 years ago when it was facing dire financial problems.

Chris said John worked tirelessly during those difficult times and in addition he had served the club with distinction over many years in his various roles including Club Secretary and Club Press Officer.

Fittingly, John’s Memorial Shield was presented once again by his daughter Leanne to winning Guisborough Town Captain James Frazer.
