Match Report
Guisborough Town put on a truly sensational performance to win their FA Cup replay 2-0 at Consett on a hugely memorable night on Tuesday.
The completely deserved victory against higher league Consett has earned the Priorymen another plum tie in the next round – a Teesside dream derby date at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium against neighbours Redcar Athletic on Saturday, 16 August (KO 3pm).
As far as the Consett replay was concerned, two really well worked and executed second half goals from Joe Ferguson (47th minute) and Sonni Coleman (57th minute) were enough to see off Consett in front of a crowd of 196 on a wickedly windy night.
After the game Guisborough Manager Nathan Haslam declared: “I’m absolutely delighted tonight. I think the lads have performed remarkably after getting a second bite of the cherry following our 2-2 draw in the first game at the KGV on Saturday.
“It was really, really tough conditions for both teams tonight with the very strong winds and I think that was always going to make for a classic game of two halves.
“The wind was in Consett’s favour first half but the lads defended very stoutly and soaked up their pressure, limiting them to very few attempts on goal really.
“Then in second half, with the wind at our backs, the lads came out and did what we needed to do. We showed some real class in both our goals and if truth be told we could have had a few more, so yes overall I’m absolutely delighted,” added Nathan.
The Priorymen did brilliantly well to keep Consett at bay in the first half with the strong wind giving the County Durham side a distinct advantage.
SUPERB START
But Guisborough got off to a superb start after the interval, scoring just two minutes into the half on 47 minutes when midfielder Jack Bailey did outstandingly well to win the ball high up into Consett’s half.
Then Jack’s midfield partner Joe Ferguson took over and let fly into the corner of the Consett net for 1-0 to the Priorymen. What an awesome strike by Joe to cap another fine individual performance.
Ten minutes later Guisborough were in wonderland when they doubled their lead with a brilliant goal involving three players in the build-up and the final strike.
First, Mason McNeill chased a good pass and pulled the ball across to teenager Jaedon Faulkner, who in turn laid it off to Sonni Coleman, who smashed the ball home into the top corner for 2-0.
That’s how the score finished but Guisborough had goalkeeper Ryan Catterick to thank for three or four excellent saves to keep another blank scoresheet.
Back to Guisborough boss Nathan Haslam: “It was really pleasing that we fought superbly against the elements tonight and that was a real challenge.
“We knew what, to a degree, Consett were going to try and do and we also knew we had to be disciplined in all that we did. We limited them to shots and crosses from around the edge of the box which was very pleasing from our point of view.
“From our player numbers one to 11 they all put a real shift in tonight and we got 10 players behind the ball when we had to.
“When we scored our first goal, we could see that they dipped a bit and when the second one went in there was a big change in their body language, we smelt blood and the goals gave us another 10 to 15 per cent in how aggressive we were with and without the ball.”
Asked by Guisborough Director Chris Wood in his post-match interview with Nathan about his reaction to the next round clash at home to Redcar Athletic, Nathan responded: “We know this will be another tough tie, they are a well-resourced football club these days with some very good players.
“But this will be a local derby in the FA Cup and clearly anything can happen. But we’ve had a very good unbeaten start to the season and we’re confident at this moment in time so it’s a game we’ll look forward to and we’ll pit our wits against another very good team,” added Nathan.
