Match Report
Guisborough Town failed to maintain the intensity of their performance against Whitley Bay a week ago and ended their second game under new manager Steve Connolly in a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Shildon on Saturday.
That said, the Priorymen were denied a golden chance to snatch a draw right at the death when strong penalty appeals for what looked like a blatant hand-ball by a defender in the Shildon penalty area were turned down.
Just a minute before that flashpoint, Guisborough had pulled a goal back from substitute Muzzy Abdullahi bundled the ball home to give the Priorymen some last ditch hope.
In truth, however, it was too little too late and nobody could be more disappointed at the end of the game than the Guisborough players themselves, as recently-appointed new Manager Steve Connolly explained.
After the game he commented: The team are disappointed with their performance and the result today.
“We just didn’t replicate the positive intensity and playing on the front foot like we did last week against Whitley Bay.
“The second half was an improvement on the first half but still not enough to create multiple clear chances.
“But today was a good lesson for all of us, and we’re looking forward to the next game to make improvements,” added Steve.
The first half hour of the match was pretty even although Shildon looked the more fluid side and Guisborough had goalkeeper Robert Dean to thank for a brilliant point blank save to keep out a Thomas Price effort.
Just when it looked like the Priorymen were going to go in level at the interval two minutes into time added on Shildon went 1-0 up when left back Ciaran Banks stormed unchallenged into the Guisborough penalty area and hammered the ball into the roof of the Guisborough net.
Guisborough brought on Muzzy Abdullahi in the second half and he certainly livened things up for the Priorymen, linking well with Kyle Davis while main striker Jason Blackburn ran his socks off but to no avail.
The Priorymen had kept Shildon largely quiet as the second half progressed but they doubled their lead in the 79th minute when Leighton Harris burst into the Guisborough box and swept the ball home under the despairing dive of Dean.
In the 86th minute Dean kept his side in the game with a brilliant save and two minutes later hope flickered for the Priorymen when left back Dan McWilliams crossed for Davis to head on and Abdullahi got a touch to send the ball into the corner of the Shildon net for 2-1.
Three minutes later Guisborough came within a whisker of equalising when Davis was quickly latched on to an attempted clearance by Jennison but his effort on the rebound went narrowly wide.
Then in the dying seconds Guisborough had that loud shout for a penalty but overall the Priorymen didn’t do enough to get anything out of the game and Shildon deserved their victory in front of a crowd of 286.
Guisborough’s next game is in midweek at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium on Wednesday, 9 October (KO 7.45pm).
