Match Report

Early goal boost for Priorymen spoiled by clinical North Shields comeback.

Guisborough Town eventually went down 3-1 at North Shields on Wednesday night, despite the boost of going ahead after just five minutes.

But although the scoreline looks convincing enough from North Shields’ point of view, the plucky Priorymen were certainly not outplayed and the main difference between the two sides overall was that Shields were more clinical in front of goal.

The game got off to a brilliant start for Guisborough when they went ahead with a well-worked goal after just five minutes.

Recent returnee to Guisborough Town Ben Jackson dropped deep, spun his opponent and threaded the ball through perfectly for Joe Pickett to slide the ball past the onrushing Shields ‘keeper for 1-0 to the Priorymen.

But Shields drew level in the 23rd minute when neat build-up play on the right culminated in Will McCamley cutting inside and curling a left footer into the far corner of the Guisborough net.

The score stayed 1-1 to half-time, reflecting the evenness of the game, but just two minutes after the interval Shields went 2-1 up when Kyle Downey headed home at the far post

FIGHTING HARD

In the 53rd minute Guisborough came so close to equalising when Jason Blackburn broke clear on goal and the Shields ‘keeper half cleared his shot but the home centre half got back to clear the ball near to the Shields’ goal-line. A let-off for Shields.

Guisborough continued fighting hard searching for an elusive equaliser but then Shields gave themselves some breathing space on 73 minutes when Jordan Lashley punished the Priorymen on the break by scoring with a good left footed finish for 3-1 to the home side.

And that was how the score stayed until the end, once again underlining the need for Guisborough to be more clinical in front of goal because they had enough chances to have earned a point out of the match.

After the game, Guisborough Manager Steve Connolly commented:

It was a difficult night which was no surprise – it’s always difficult coming up here to North Shields and they have been on very good form of late. We started well and positively and got a very good goal early on and were doing the right things with good possession on the ball but after that excellent start I think we just stopped doing the good things.

We are probably going to have to be a wee bit braver and take more risks and that means we’re going to lose the ball at times but we need to stick to our game plan and the things we are trying to implement in the team.

Steve was pleased with the performance of young debutant Alfie Turnbull when he came onto the pitch as substitute, commenting:

He’s a good ball carrier and loves to dribble and ultimately he helps your team get up the pitch and get closer to the opposition’s box. He’s coming back from injury so obviously it’s going to take time to get him back to full flow.

Looking ahead to Guisborough’s next game at home to Newcastle Benfield this coming Saturday, 26 October Steve added:

This will be another tough game as they’re in good form and have changed their manager recently. So they’re on a great run at the moment.

But this is an opportunity for us to keep doing the right things. We are seeing glimpses of success with the things we are trying to put in place but this is a process and it’s going to take a wee bit more time but ultimately Saturday gives us another opportunity especially at home to have more of the ball and be better on the ball.
