Match Report
Guisborough Town striker Kyle Davis produced a superb Man-of-the-Match performance and two opportunist goals to clinch a memorable victory for the Priorymen in an incident-packed game at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium on Saturday.
Guisborough suffered a body blow after just 25 minutes when defender Brad Mills was sent off for a second yellow card following a sliding tackle on a Seaham striker in which he actually won the ball.
But Mills had already been booked earlier and the referee decided to brandish another yellow and Mills was off!
It was a somewhat harsh decision to produce a second yellow card so relatively early in the game and many in the bumper crowd of 542 had expected just a final warning for ‘Millsy’ rather than the referee reaching for the red card.
Mills’ game is always about full throttle commitment and curbing this style of play would go against the grain for the energetic versatile player – but he may need think hard about his all-action approach to the game.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Guisborough rallied well and virtually on the stroke of half-time they took the lead with a Kurtis Howes penalty and then 10 minutes into the second half Davis scored the first of his two goals.
But to their credit Seaham hit back strongly and two goals inside six minutes midway through the second half saw Red Star drawn level at 2-2 before Guisborough hit back with another Kyle Davis goal in the 82nd minute to clinch a dramatic win for the Priorymen.
After the game, Guisborough Town Manager Steve Connolly said he was very proud of his players, commenting: “I’m very satisfied and pleased and a wee bit relieved as well.
“Overall, I’m really proud of the boys as there were a number of challenges and hurdles for them to get over today and in doing so I think we found out a heck of a lot about the team today.
“Obviously going down to 10 men after only 25 minutes was never in the plan but the boys adjusted well and rode out the next 15 minutes or so as they had to but then to go 2-0 up was really quite impressive.
“But when Seaham pegged us back to 2-2 – and credit to them for that – then if I’m honest I feared the worst so we had to tweak things ever so slightly and the boys went on and got the winner and deserve a lot of praise for that.
“When you think of some of our players cramping up with the efforts they had put in being a man down and you see the likes of Kurtis Howes and Joe Pickett dropping back when they needed to that’s a great attitude to show and the sort of thing that really spurs the changing room and that’s why I’m particularly proud today,” continued Steve.
Turning to the performance and contribution of Kyle Davis, Steve said: “Kyle’s goals will steal the headlines – and very good goals they were too – but when you’re down to 10 men and you’re the only striker up front that can become a lonely old job.
“But Kyle pressed and pressured and worked hard and when we needed him to he had moments of quality with his goals – so we’re really happy and pleased for Kyle because he’s been doing a job for us out wide and when he’s been given the chance to play down the middle he’s shown us just how valuable he is for us.”
Commenting on the bumper crowd of 542 – swelled by the fact that it was one of Guisborough’s highly celebrated ‘Juniors Days’ Steve said: “It was great to see all the kids here today and their mums and dads but when you go down to 10 men and the rain’s belting down you’re kind of hoping we can still put on a show for them.
“I think everyone who leaves will say it was another entertaining Northern League game and although we’ll not win every game we do want to entertain the loyal Guisborough Town fans and hopefully today they’ve all left very happy, added Steve.
After the shock of going down to 10 men, Guisborough rallied well, soaked up Seaham’s inevitable pressure and then found themselves 1-0 in front in the second minute of time added on to the first half when Davis was brought down in the Seaham box and up stepped Howes to tuck home his spot kick just inside the left post.
In the 55th minute Guisborough doubled their lead to 2-0 when Davis surged through on the Seaham goal and cleverly drew the ‘keeper before slotting home coolly into the bottom corner.
On 70 minutes Seaham hauled themselves back into contention when Michael Annang-Colquoon took advantage of a defensive Guisborough mistake to squeeze the ball home inside Guisborough ‘keeper Robert Dean’s near post for 2-1.
Then just six minutes later Seaham levelled when a deep cross came over from the left flank and Thomas Lawson hit a firm side-footed volley into the corner of the Guisborough net for 2-2.
There were fears that the huge effort the tiring 10-man Priorymen had bravely put in might hand the initiative to Seaham but Davis had other ideas in the 82nd minute!
He latched on to a long ball over the top and with unerring accuracy rifled the ball home to clinch a famous 3-2 win for the Priorymen.
Guisborough are without a game now next midweek because scheduled opponents Whickham are involved in a Durham County Cup tie.
So it’s a welcome week off for Guisborough until next Saturday, 19 October when they entertain Cumbrian side Carlisle at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium (3pm).
