Match Report

Guisborough Town’s wizard winger Joe Pickett continued his rich recent vein of scoring form with another two goals to maintain the Priorymen’s glorious unbeaten run at 11 games at Penrith on Saturday.

Pickett grabbed his brace of goals in the first half with two great shots – both brilliant efforts drilled into the bottom corner of the Penrith goal. The two-goal performance brought Joe’s goals tally in the last three games to four and great news for Guisborough is that he’s looking back to his devastating best.

With a comfortable half-time lead under tier belts, Guisborough then produced a totally professional second half, keeping a clean sheet and finishing comfortable 2-0 winners over their Cumbrian rivals.

After the game Guisborough Assistant Manager described the victory as a “great result and a great performance – just what we needed today.”

We’re on a great run at the moment and it was nice to get over the line early doors with a 2-0 half-time lead and then show a professional performance in the second half and clinch a clean sheet as well.

“DELIVERING IMPORTANT GOALS”

Harry paid rich tribute to goal hero Joe Pickett, saying:

Joe’s been in good goal-scoring form the last few games, he’s finding pockets and he’s delivering important goals for us. It was great when Joe scored his second goal seconds before half-time, a superb shot from the edge of the box, bottom corner which effectively killed off the game for us.

So it’s credit to the lads where it was due and to then see the game out was a thoroughly professional performance.

The clean sheet was particularly pleasing and that’s had a big impact on the lads and hopefully we will take the boost of this into the festive programme.

Harry paid tribute to the recent form of defenders Dan McWilliams and Dylan McAvoy: “Individually Dan’s been very solid while we’ve been with the club while Dylan has only played in his own position once in the last four games during which he’s been fantastic.”

Despite this latest victory and another three points, the Priorymen remain in seventh position due to other teams around them winning, but tantalisingly Guisborough are now just six points off the top spot, currently occupied by arch Teesside rivals Redcar Athletic.

Town will be looking to consolidate and further improve on their league position with three home games upcoming at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium within the next two weeks, as follows:

  • Boxing Day, 26 December – Guisborough Town v Boro Rangers (KO 12 noon).
  • 28 December – Guisborough Town v Tow Law Town (KO 3pm).
  • 11 January 2025 – Guisborough Town v Northallerton Town (KO 3pm).
  • In between the above Guisborough also have away matches as follows:
  • 21 December – Penrith v Guisborough Town (KO 3pm)
  • 4 January 2025 – Boro Rangers v Guisborough Town (KO 3pm)

The Teesside derby with Boro Rangers on Boxing Day is a particularly mouth-watering – and thirst quenching prospect! – with the bar open from 10am prior to the big kick-off at 12 noon.

In addition to the above, for good measure and excitement the Priorymen travel to arch local rivals Redcar Athletic on 18 January (KO 3pm), so plenty at stake as Guisborough endeavour to get into the league play-off reckoning in the New Year.
