Guisborough Town once again showed how they can punch well above their weight off the field when they hosted another sell-out Sportsman’s Dinner featuring former Boro legends Paul Merson and Craig Hignett on Friday.
It was a hugely successful night, with the audience enthralled by a succession of footballing anecdotes from a very entertaining double act by ‘Merse’ and ‘Higgy’ who combined brilliantly – just like they did when they played together at the ‘Riverside Stadium.
Merson, now a successful Sky Sports TV football pundit, opened up uncensored candour about the ups and downs of his football career, not shying away from the problems he had with drink and drug addiction and gambling.
He was asked what the biggest gamble he had ever lost in a single bet and without hesitation he answered £150,000, to gasps from the audience.
The evening earned hundreds of pounds for Guisborough’s coffers and all-round proved a tremendous success.
Obviously this was followed by disappointment the next day when the Priorymen’s coach trip to Carlisle was cancelled due to the very wet weather in Cumbria.
Guisborough ‘Town Club Photographer captured some good shots of the two guest speakers from the evening.
